The answer is NO.

The Nursing Officer Recruitment Common Eligibility Test (NORCET) conducted by AIIMS New Delhi is not restricted only to B.Sc. Nursing candidates, and a candidate does not need to have studied at an AIIMS nursing college.

Eligible candidates can include:

B.Sc. Nursing graduates
B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing graduates
Post-Basic B.Sc. Nursing graduates
Certain GNM diploma holders

However, GNM candidates have an additional experience requirement that B.Sc. Nursing candidates generally do not have under the standard NORCET eligibility route.

B.Sc. Nursing Candidate

If you have an eligible B.Sc. Nursing qualification and required Nurse/Midwife registration:

You do not need to complete the separate two-year hospital-experience requirement prescribed under the GNM route.

GNM Candidate

For a GNM candidate:

Two years of eligible experience is mandatory.

So simply completing GNM does not immediately make a candidate eligible for NORCET.

Example 1: Fresh B.Sc. Nursing Graduate

Myth 2: “You Must Study Nursing From AIIMS to Give NORCET”

Completely incorrect.

The notification does not say your B.Sc. Nursing or GNM must be from AIIMS.

It says the qualification should be from an:

Indian Nursing Council / State Nursing Council recognised institution, university, board or council, as applicable.

Therefore, eligible candidates can come from:

Government nursing colleges
Government nursing schools
Private nursing colleges
Private nursing schools
State nursing institutions
Universities

provided the qualification/institution has the required recognition.

Example: Private College B.Sc. Nursing Student

Suppose you completed B.Sc. Nursing from a private college in West Bengal.

The college is properly recognised for the course by the relevant nursing authorities, and you have valid Nurse & Midwife registration.

You do not become ineligible merely because your college is private or because it is not AIIMS.

The recognition and qualification matter—not whether the college name contains “AIIMS.”

What About GNM From a Private Nursing School?

The same principle applies.

The official wording allows GNM from a recognised:

Council

It does not say GNM must be completed at AIIMS.

But the GNM candidate still needs:

Two years of qualifying experience in a minimum 50-bedded hospital.

Does the 2-Year GNM Experience Have to Be in a Government Hospital?

This is another major misconception.

The NORCET qualification clause does not say “Government hospital only.”

The official wording requires experience in a:

minimum 50-bedded hospital

without restricting that eligibility clause only to government hospitals.

Therefore, a genuine private-hospital experience can meet the stated hospital requirement if:

The hospital genuinely has at least 50 beds
Your employment/experience is genuine
The required duration is completed
The experience falls after the required qualification/registration point
The experience certificate can be properly verified

Final acceptance remains subject to document verification by AIIMS/the allotted participating institution.

Very Important: Your Experience Certificate Should Show Hospital Bed Strength

This can become crucial during Document Verification.

AIIMS has previously specifically instructed that, where the 50-bed experience criterion applies, the experience certificate issued by the hospital administration should clearly mention the number of beds and establish that the hospital has 50 or more beds.

So if you are working specifically to become eligible for NORCET through GNM, it is wise to ensure the hospital can issue a proper experience certificate mentioning:

Can Experience From a 30-Bed Hospital Be Used?

For the GNM NORCET eligibility condition:

No, not for satisfying the 50-bed requirement.

The notified minimum is:

50 beds.

So two years in a 20-bed, 30-bed or 40-bed hospital would not satisfy the stated minimum-bed criterion merely because the duration is sufficient.

When Does the GNM Two-Year Experience Start Counting?

This is extremely important.

AIIMS says the required two years must be obtained after acquiring the essential qualification.

The notification explains this as after:

Completing the course/residency period
Declaration of the result
Registration with the State/Indian Nursing Council

The required experience must then be completed by the eligibility cut-off/closing date prescribed in the relevant recruitment notice.

In simple language:

You cannot normally count work done before becoming properly qualified and registered simply to complete the two-year NORCET experience requirement.

Does Internship Count as the Two Years?

Do not assume that normal GNM training/internship automatically becomes the required two-year post-qualification experience.

AIIMS specifically treats the experience as something acquired after completion of the required educational qualification, result and registration conditions.

So the safer rule is:

GNM course/internship first → result & registration → qualifying hospital experience afterward.

Do I Need State Nursing Council Registration?

Yes.

Registration is a core part of NORCET eligibility.

For both the B.Sc. and GNM pathways, the notification requires registration as a:

Nurse & Midwife

with the State/Indian Nursing Council as applicable.

Passing B.Sc. Nursing or GNM alone is therefore not the only requirement.

Is ANM Alone Eligible for NORCET?

No, not under the standard Nursing Officer qualification listed in NORCET.

Do Candidates Need an AIIMS Background to Get an AIIMS Nursing Officer Job?

No.

Selection is through the recruitment process and eligibility rules.

You do not receive preference simply because you studied nursing at AIIMS, nor are candidates from recognised non-AIIMS institutions excluded merely because they studied elsewhere.
