What Are Opening Rank and Closing Rank?

Understanding OR and CR correctly is essential.

Opening Rank

The Opening Rank (OR) is the GMR of the highest-ranked candidate among those allotted that particular institute/course/category combination in the round.

Closing Rank

The Closing Rank (CR) is the GMR of the last candidate allotted that particular institute/course/category combination in that round.

For example, if a government GNM college shows:

it means the Open-seat allotments recorded by the portal for that institute in Round 1 ranged from GMR 270 to GMR 1147.

The closing rank is generally more useful for counselling analysis, because it shows how far the allotment extended in that category during that round.

Very Important: These Are GMRs, Not Category Ranks

Candidates often make a major mistake while reading category-wise OR-CR.

WBJEEB prepares separate category merit positions, but the Board clearly states that counselling, allotment and admission sequencing is based on GMR only—not category rank. Category ranks are provided only for candidates' information.
