What Is an Opening Rank?

The opening rank is the best or smallest General Merit Rank allotted a particular course, college, category and quota in a counselling round.

For example, suppose the Open-category rank range for a government GNM college is:

It means the first Open-category candidate allotted that college had GMR 600, while the last allotted Open-category candidate had GMR 1,500.

A smaller rank number represents a better merit position.

What Is a Closing Rank?

The closing rank is the last or largest GMR at which a seat was allotted for a particular combination of:

The closing rank is commonly called the college cut-off. However, it is not a qualifying mark and does not guarantee admission in a later round.

Why Are There Separate ANM and GNM Rank Charts?

WBJEEB publishes two separate merit ranks:

ANM(R) GMR GNM GMR

Therefore, the ANM and GNM opening and closing ranks must be presented separately.

A candidate’s ANM rank cannot be directly compared with another candidate’s GNM rank. Even when the examination is common, the merit lists, participating institutes, eligible candidates and available seats are different.

There may also be additional divisions because:

ANM(R) admission is available only to female candidates. GNM admission is available to both female and male candidates. Only two government GNM institutes are specified for male candidates, apart from certain private institutes. Every category and special reservation has a separate OR-CR row.
